Statement of Commitment to Cultural Safety

The Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) is a statutory body responsible for the regulation of the teaching profession throughout Queensland, and operates in the public interest.

The QCT recognises Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the First Peoples of Australia and the Traditional Custodians of the different and diverse countries within Queensland.

The QCT acknowledges the wrongs of our past and the enduring impact of colonisation and dispossession on First Nations Peoples including social, wellbeing and economic disadvantages.

This is the QCT’s statement of strategic intention towards continual improvement and prioritisation of inclusive practice and cultural safety, to support an operating environment where First Nations Peoples feel safe, valued and respected in engaging with the organisation.

In the spirit of reconciliation, unity and respect for the world’s oldest continuous living culture, the QCT is committed to:

• Acknowledging Traditional Custodians of land, sea, sky and waterways.
• The Universal Principle and building an internal culture of continual learning, ongoing improvement and accountability for cultural capability.
• Developing culturally responsive policies and practices which support the QCT to regulate the teaching profession in the welfare and best interests of all children and which support better outcomes for First Nations Peoples.
• Better understanding transgenerational trauma and its impacts, and ensuring that policies and practices support appropriate cultural considerations in its decision making.
• Continuing to engage our First Nations Reference Group to ensure that our policies and practices are culturally safe, responsive and appropriate.
