Teaching performance assessment
What you need to know
To graduate from a Queensland initial teacher education program, you must complete a teaching performance assessment (TPA). This ensures new teachers are ready for the classroom and can deliver high-quality education for students.
What is the TPA?
The TPA is an assessment that:
- uses student data and evidence from your final-year professional experience
- focuses on the teaching and learning cycle: plan, teach, assess, and reflect
- shows how your teaching impacts three focus students and how you adapt your teaching for their needs
- assesses your skills based on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) at the Graduate stage
- is reliable, with moderation processes to support consistent scoring by assessors.
Types of TPAs in Queensland
Different universities in Queensland use different TPAs:
- Graduate Teaching Performance Assessment (GTPA): used by Australian Catholic University, Christian Heritage College, Central Queensland University, Griffith University, James Cook University, Southern Cross University, The University of Queensland, and University of Southern Queensland
- Quality Teaching Performance Assessment (QTPA): used by Queensland University of Technology and University of the Sunshine Coast
- Assessment for Graduate Teaching (AfGT): used by the Australian College of Christian Studies
Support for TPA
The QCT works with key partners to create resources that help schools implement the TPA reforms.
