Welcome to the QCT's new website.

Provisional to full

Provisionally registered teachers can move to full registration once they have one year of acceptable teaching experience and meet the Proficient career stage of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (the Standards).

The QCT's Provisional to full registration guideline [PDF 2.8MB] and the Transitioning from provisional to full registration policy [PDF 76KB] provide detailed information on the process.

Starting the process

Your transition to full registration is based on ongoing support and professional discussions with other teachers and leaders in your school or setting.

You can begin the process in your myQCT account. A Queensland school may also start the process on your behalf; you will receive an email to let you know.

You will need a reviewer from the school who holds full registration. This will be the principal, or they can delegate another teacher in a leadership position, such as a deputy principal or head of department.

This reviewer must know you, your work, and the registration process.

Acceptable teaching experience

Teach for at least one year (200 days in total) after you are approved for provisional registration. Experience completed during an initial teacher education program or while holding Permission to Teach is not included.

Your experience must have been completed no more than five years before applying for full registration. It can be spread across different schools or settings and include both single days and longer teaching periods.

Acceptable teaching experience includes teaching in a:
  • prescribed school in Queensland
  • recognised school in another Australian state or territory
  • recognised school in New Zealand.

Other settings might be allowed. Check the Acceptable other experience for moving to full registration policy [PDF 79KB] for more details.

Evidence against the Standards

You must show that you meet the Standards at the Proficient career stage. This means providing evidence for the descriptors under the seven Standards.

Evidence can come from multiple schools or settings, which is helpful if you’re not working full-time or if you move between schools.

Your evidence must be your own work, show how it meets the Standards and include:
  • lesson observations: notes or reports from a mentor, experienced teacher, or principal
  • examples of your work: plans, lessons, assessments, and reports with annotations showing how they meet the standards
  • collaboration: proof of working with other teachers on teaching activities
  • reflections: records of your thoughts on your teaching and professional growth against the Standards.

Finalising the process

Your evidence must be checked by your reviewer. They will look at your evidence and decide if you meet the standards, then make a recommendation to the QCT.

Once this is done, you can finish the application in myQCT. You will see the reviewer’s recommendation and can check it before you submit.

Early childhood settings

If you are a provisionally registered teacher working in an early childhood setting, there are some things that are a little different.

What is different?

You need to apply to the QCT for approval of your reviewer before you start counting your 200 days of experience. You do this by starting the application to move to full registration in your myQCT account.

Your reviewer must be a teacher with full registration – if there is no available reviewer in your centre, then you may seek one from a nearby centre, primary school, or a teacher who visits in an advisory role.

In early childhood services, one person can serve as both mentor and reviewer. Alternatively, you may choose a different person for each role to support all aspects of their professional development.

What is the same?

You need to have delivered an education program to children for one year (200 days) after being granted provisional registration. Your acceptable teaching experience includes delivering:

  • a nationally approved learning framework under the National Quality Framework (NQF) administered by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).

You also need to provide evidence against the Proficient career stage of the Standards. You should use the Transition to full registration: An evidence guide for early childhood teachers [PDF 12.8MB] to assist with compiling evidence.

To finalise your transition to full registration, your reviewer will recommend to the QCT. You will review this recommendation, let us know if you disagree, and submit your application.
