Welcome to the QCT's new website.

Continuing professional development

The QCT requires fully registered teachers to complete continuing professional development (CPD) every year.

This applies whether you teach full-time, part-time, supply, or contract. The CPD Policy and Framework [PDF 145KB] highlights the importance of ongoing professional learning and sets out the requirements for registration renewal.

The Policy and Framework aligns with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) and specifies the type and amount of CPD needed. Over five years, teachers must meet annual CPD requirements to renew their registration.

  • Teachers must complete at least 20 hours of CPD each year if they teach 20 days or more.
  • If you teach fewer than 20 days in a calendar year, there is no CPD requirement.
  • CPD activities must balance employer-directed and teacher-identified learning, cover a variety of activities, and align with the APST.
  • Examples of CPD include mandatory employer training, workshops, online courses, and professional reading.

It is important to note that routine teaching tasks or extracurricular activities do not count as CPD.

Teachers may be audited to ensure they meet CPD requirements. Teachers must provide evidence, such as certificates, workshop confirmation emails, attendance lists, or reflection notes. The audit helps the QCT decide whether to renew registration, with or without conditions.

Teachers are responsible for keeping accurate CPD records. The QCT offers an online tool through myQCT to help track activities. Using this tool is recommended, as it simplifies the process if you are selected for an audit. Records should include details like the activity's timeframe, provider, and how it relates to the APST.

There are many ways to access CPD, including:
    • QCT resources: workshops, web conferences, and online tools in myQCT
    • Your employer: professional development days and training programs
    • External providers: courses from universities, private organisations, or professional associations
    • Government and statutory bodies: resources from the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA), Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), and others.

    CPD activities include:
    • attending workshops, seminars, or conferences
    • participating in curriculum or assessment training
    • leading school-based projects
    • engaging in educational research or action research
    • completing formal studies in education or a related field.

If you work as a supply or contract teacher, you still need to complete 20 hours of CPD if you teach 20 days or more in a year. Keep records of your teaching hours (e.g. payslips or service statements) and CPD activities. Networking with other teachers and joining professional associations can help you find CPD opportunities.

CPD is your professional responsibility. It’s not just about meeting requirements, it’s about growing as a teacher and improving student outcomes. Make sure to stay organised, keep your records up to date, and take advantage of the many resources available to you.
