In line with our research plan priority to recognise emerging issues in education, the QCT commissioned this research to gain an evidence base of Permission to Teach (PTT) holders’ experiences after a recent rise in applications.

PTT remains the only alternative form of approval to teach in Queensland. It is granted with strict parameters for a specific teaching position for a specified period.

Drawing on data, survey findings from 820 participants, and 13 case studies, this report provides valuable insight into the experiences of preservice teachers working under PTT positions in Queensland schools while undertaking initial teacher education.

It outlines the benefits and challenges of PTT – while recounting participants’ perspectives – to conclude that PTT is an effective pathway into teaching.

The report also offers eight recommendations to improve preservice teachers’ PTT experiences, with the aim of strengthening current practices and better supporting them.
