Program description and rationale

The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) prepares graduates to work in early childhood centres and schools with children from birth to age 8. Students must complete 96 credit points of study, as outlined in the course structure, including discipline-specific curriculum, pedagogical studies, general education studies, and professional experience.

The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) includes 120 days of supervised professional experience across a range of early childhood and primary school settings: 80 days in schools (Prep to Year 3), 30 days in 3–5-year-old settings, and 10 days in birth-2-year-old settings. Students also complete 50 hours of service learning.

The program provides a subject specialisation in the following curriculum area:

James Cook University Education graduates have successfully completed the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE), and have demonstrated achievement of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at Graduate level by way of the final Queensland Professional Experience Reporting Framework (QPERF) and the Graduate Teaching Performance Assessment (GTPA); and demonstrated knowledge and met the Learning Outcomes of the core content.
