Mandatory RTT elements

If you have a Returning to Teaching (RTT) condition on your registration, you may be wondering why you have it and what to do about it.

Every five years you submit a renewal application to have your full registration renewed.

One of the questions on the renewal form asks if you have taught 100 days or more in Australian schools in the five years prior.

An RTT condition is applied when teachers answer no to this question.

If you have an RTT condition, this does not imply a reduction in status or credentials.

You will still be a fully registered teacher who can teach in Australian schools, which includes teaching kindergarten in an early childhood service.

You simply need to complete RTT Professional Development (PD) if you start teaching in Queensland after your condition is applied.

These professional learning brings your knowledge and skills up-to-date and helps maintain the integrity of the teaching profession.

Fulfilling the RTT requirements is easy and free.

What you need to do depends on how many days you have taught in Queensland since your RTT condition was applied.

If you haven't taught since your condition was applied you are not required to take action.

Of course, you'll still need to pay your annual fee and apply to renew every five years to keep your registration current.

The condition will simply sit on your registration and is not required to be fulfilled until you commence teaching in Queensland.

If you have taught since your condition was applied, you need to complete some RTT professional development no later than 12 months from your first day back.

This means that you can begin teaching and do the PD as you work.

How much RTT PD you need to complete depends on how many days you've taught in any calendar year since your condition was applied.

If you've taught between one and 19 days in a calendar year, you need to complete just the mandatory elements. Your condition will remain on your registration after you've completed this.

If you've taught 20 days or more in a calendar year, you need to complete the full RTT program.

This includes the mandatory elements as well as your choice of PD from the context and role-specific and teacher-specific sections. All up, this must total 20 hours of PD.

As you go along, log each module in your CPD records in your myQCT account.

Once you've completed and logged the mandatory elements or the full program, you must tell us by applying to have your RTT condition reviewed through your myQCT account. We will review your PD and contact you.
