Biotechnology is no longer the domain of top-secret laboratories: Sunshine Coast students at Maroochydore became the world’s first to perform real gene cloning in the classroom, thanks largely to Gary’s pioneering achievements. In standard school laboratories and in partnership with local experts, Gary’s lessons in genetic engineering and chemistry have boosted interest in science, as well as generating extensive international attention through conferences and presentations. With the program already a winner in the Department of Education and Training’s Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools, Gary is now developing online resources to further share his cutting-edge, scientific skills.
