Until Sarah came to Tully, the closest some of her students had come to a restaurant or commercial kitchen was seeing one on television – now they are the preferred 'front of house' staff for some Mission Beach caterers and events coordinators. By working with local industry groups, Sarah is giving students a taste for the hospitality industry, starting with the chance to gain their Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) competency and providing practical experience at functions including weddings, Christmas parties, Council meetings and the students’ own Year 12 formal. Sarah’s vocational education achievements have been recognised locally, while the school also won three out of six awards at last year’s Tropical North Queensland Culinary Challenge.
