Value of registration
Teacher registration acknowledges teaching as an important profession. As in other professions that require registration, such as medicine, law and nursing, registration highlights the unique professional qualifications, knowledge and skills required to practice in that role.
A system of registration ensures that only appropriately qualified and suitable people are employed to teach in Queensland schools. This contributes to protecting educational standards and student safety, and also upholds the reputation of the teaching profession.
For the individual teacher, registration means:
- Being accepted by colleagues as a member of the teaching profession
- Being recognised by the public as a member of the teaching profession
- Being eligible to be employed as teacher in a prescribed school in Queensland
- Through mutual recognition arrangements, being eligible to teach in other Australian states (subject to certain conditions)
The QCT provides for Queensland registered teachers:
- Access to a national, professional magazine for teachers, published quarterly online
- Periodic summaries of the latest research in education, published four times a year as QCT Research Digest
- A password-accessed Teacher Services facility on the QCT website
- A small number of annual research grants
- An annual QCT lecture
