Renewal of Registration
Under the Education (Queensland College of Teachers) Act 2005, every five years all fully registered teachers must renew their registration. This requires making a formal application for renewal of registration and includes payment of the annual fee.
The period of full registration is five years from the day the QCT grants the registration. However, if a teacher held provisional registration and
the teacher subsequently obtained full registration, the period of full registration is reduced by the period for which the teacher held provisional registration.
For example, if a teacher was provisionally registered for two years, the initial period of full registration would be three years.
Requirements for Renewal of Registration
For renewal of registration, teachers who demonstrate recency of practice must also have undertaken continuing professional development (CPD) as required under the Continuing Professional Development Framework of the QCT. For teachers without recency of practice, full registration will be renewed with a Returning to Teaching condition. All teachers must also demonstrate their continuing suitability to teach (a criminal history check will be conducted by the QCT).
For a summary of Renewal of Registration requirements see the Fact Sheet. An online presentation is also available to enhance teacher understanding.

Recency of Practice defined
'Recency of practice' is defined as having practised as a teacher, whether or not on a full-time basis, for at least one year within the five year period of registration. 'One year' is defined as 200 days or 1000 hours of teaching. A 'teacher' is defined as a person who delivers an educational program, assesses student participation in an educational program, and/or administers or provides consistent and substantial educational leadership to an educational program. The teaching must be in a school or in another setting delivering an educational program prescribed under the Education (Queensland College of Teachers) Act 2005. This means that, for example, educational advisers who regularly work in schools and Principals who do not engage in classroom teaching, are included in the definition of 'teacher'.
Members of the profession who do not meet recency of practice requirements in a period of registration are able to have their full registration renewed and will not be required to have met the CPD requirements for renewal of registration at the end of that period of registration. However, their registration will be renewed subject to a Returning to Teaching condition. Should these teachers wish to return to the classroom, they will be required to complete a "Returning to Teaching" program in the year prior to or during the first 12 months of returning to teaching in a school, to ensure that their knowledge, skills and practice are up to date.

*Please note that there has been a recent change to legislation which affects the definition of teacher referred to in the online presentation. 'Teacher' is now defined as a person who delivers an educational program, assesses student participation in an educational program, and/or administers or provides consistent and substantial educational leadership to an educational program. The teaching must be in a school or in another setting delivering an educational program prescribed under the Education (Queensland College of Teachers) Act 2005. This requires the educational program to be based on a kindergarten guideline or syllabus approved or accredited by the Qld Studies Authority.
