Recency of practice
‘Recency of practice’ for purposes of renewal of registration means that a person has either:
- practised as a teacher whether or not on a full-time basis, for at least one year within the five-year period of registration; OR
- attained experience the QCT recognises is the equivalent of teaching at a (Queensland) school for at least one year within the five-year period of registration.
In either case, 'one year' is defined as 200 days or 1000 hours of teaching.
Members of the profession who do not meet recency of practice requirements in a period of registration can have their full registration renewed. However, their registration will be renewed subject to a 'Returning to Teaching' condition. Should these teachers wish to continue or return to teaching in a Queensland school, they will be required to complete a 'Returning to Teaching' program in the year prior to or in the first 12 months after returning to teaching in a school, to ensure that their knowledge, skills and practice are up to date.
