Returning to Teach (RTT) Programs
Teachers with full registration who do not meet recency of practice at the time of their five-yearly renewal of registration will have their full registration renewed but with a Returning to Teaching condition. Should they wish to continue or return to teaching in a school they will be required to complete a Returning to Teaching professional development program either in the 12 months prior to, or within 12 months after, returning to teach in a school. This is to ensure that their knowledge, skills and practice are up to date.
Please note: The only teachers who are required by QCT to do a Returning to Teaching (RTT) program are fully-registered teachers who have a RTT condition placed on their registration. This condition is stated on the Certificate of Registration which is issued after the annual fee payment. The RTT program only needs to be undertaken if a teacher with a RTT condition wishes to continue or return to teaching in a Queensland school.
The Queensland College of Teachers has developed policy regarding the content, structure and delivery of these programs, based on the requirements of the legislation. Teachers must complete an approved RTT program in order for the QCT to remove the condition on their registration. Programs are delivered by appropriate providers in a variety of flexible modes, for example face-to-face and/or online learning.
Content and Duration of Returning to Teaching Programs
Returning to Teaching programs will comprise 30 hours of engagement across five strands:
Strand A: Effective Teaching Practice
Strand B: Curriculum and Assessment Issues
Strand C: Syllabus implementation
Strand D: Policies
Strand E: Legislation
