English Language Requirement

Under the Education (Queensland College of Teachers) Act 2005, a person must meet eligibility and professional practice requirements to be eligible for registration.

The Education (Queensland College of Teachers) Regulation 2005 specifies the following as a professional practice requirement:

’the ability to communicate in spoken and written English at a professional level with students, parents, teachers and other persons.’

All applicants for registration are required to provide evidence of English language proficiency (ELP) with their application, except those who have completed the full four years of higher education study required for registration (or qualifications assessed as comparable) in English in:

• Australia
• New Zealand
• United Kingdom
• United States of America

• Canada
• Republic of Ireland

Note: Applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree in a non-exempted country, followed by a one year postgraduate course of preservice teacher education in English in one of the exempted countries listed above, are required to provide evidence of having met the ELP requirement.

The ELP requirement may be met by obtaining the required scores in one of the following English language tests.

 

Recognised tests Required Scores
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Academic Module - An average band score of 7.5 across all four skill areas of Listening,
Speaking, Reading and Writing

- A score of at least 8.0 for Speaking and Listening

- A score of at least 7.0 for Reading and Writing
International Second Language Proficiency Ratings (ISLPR) ) – only if conducted by approved test centres (see below) A rating of at least 4 in each of the skill areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing
Professional English Assessment for Teachers (PEAT) – if this has already been undertaken for employment in New South Wales A result of Level A in each of the four skill areas of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.

 

The date of the English language assessment must be no more than 2 years prior to the date of applying for registration.  All test criteria must be met on an individual test.  Certified copies of the test results are required.

Information about testing procedures and costs involved should be obtained from the test centres, and you should make it clear to the centre before undertaking the test that the assessment is for the QCT.
