Do you know that you might be the only adult in a child’s life whom they can trust? Child abuse is a serious and difficult issue and teachers have a crucial role in their protection.
QUT’s Dr Kerryann Walsh (Faculty of Education) and Associate Professor Ben Mathews (Faculty of Law) present the QCT’s third annual lecture, Child protection: reporting child abuse and neglect, which includes a framework for understanding the types, incidents and causes of child abuse as well as a teacher’s role in reporting suspected cases. Learn more about the warning signs and indicators of child abuse and neglect, the fundamentals of reporting suspected cases and methods for responding to the needs of abused and neglected children while they are at school.
The QCT has captured the lecture as a resource for teachers and it is available for download on the QCT’s YouTube channel.
Completion of the associated activities enables this resource to contribute to teachers’ Continuing Professional Development.
Further information recommended by Dr Walsh is A guide for adults to identify, assess and respond to sexual behaviours which cause concern provided by Family Planning Queensland.

Four teachers, from schools in Stanthorpe, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and a central Queensland community, have been selected as winners of QCT Teacher Research Grants for 2011. The teachers will present papers at this year’s conferences of the Australian Association of Special Education, the Australian Science Teachers Association, and the Australian Association for Research in Education.
A small number of research grants are awarded annually to practising teachers to assist them to attend, and present their research at, key Australian education conferences. Applicants must be registered teachers, currently teaching in Queensland schools, who have undertaken research related to their teaching practice or that of their colleagues. The grant provides financial assistance to cover conference registration fees and travel and accommodation associated with conference attendance. |

Three award categories recognise teachers in different stages of their careers and The Courier-Mail has combined with the QCT to reward inspirational teachers with more than 15 years’ service in Queensland schools.
The new award is named after Emeritus Professor Watts, a former primary school teacher and twice Chair of the Board of Teacher Education, a predecessor to the QCT. Her eminent career included teacher education at the University of Queensland, research, Indigenous education and special education. The award aims to recognise the special qualities and inspiration to students that come from a lengthy career of service. Download a nomination form. |
