Professional development

2011 Professional engagement program

The Queensland College of Teachers will be holding information and professional development sessions around the state, from April to June, regarding teacher registration.

The workshop for provisionally registered teachers is an opportunity to gain first hand knowledge of the process and requirements for moving from provisional to full registration. School administrators and teachers who support provisionally registered teachers will gain an understanding of the process and associated responsibilities.

The professional development session for fully registered teachers will provide information about the requirements for maintaining full registration. Teachers will have the opportunity to ask questions about the Continuing Professional Development Framework and recording of professional development activities. Some feedback from the first cohort of teachers who renewed full registration will also be shared.

Teachers can register online at www.qct.edu.au/interactive/events

Renewal of full registration

Renewal of full registration

The end of 2010 saw the first iteration of the renewal application process for teachers in Queensland. Some 70,000 persons with full registration as teachers in Queensland were eligible to apply, for the first time, for renewal of their teacher registration. Five-yearly renewal of full registration ensures that teachers with full registration have up-to-date experience and knowledge in teaching.

The QCT would like to thank teachers for their support during this first time through the renewal process.

The QCT is currently reviewing the renewal process to determine what worked well, what didn’t, and how the process could be improved. The review is being undertaken by a working party appointed by the QCT Board, assisted by a project officer appointed from a Brisbane school.

Teaching Awards

QCT Teaching Awards

Nominations will open shortly for the 2011 QCT Teaching Awards. The Awards recognise excellent teachers around the State.

Cash prizes will again be provided by sponsors, Queensland Teachers’ Credit Union and Teachers’ Union Health, in the categories of Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Beginning to Teach.

The 2011 Awards will include the inaugural Professor Betty H Watts OBE Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching.

A poster and nomination forms will be available on our website [www.qct.edu.au/awards] in late April and information will be provided to all schools.

election

Election of practising teachers to QCT board

In May 2011 the QCT will conduct an election for three practising teachers (two from the State school sector and one from the non-State school sector) to serve on the QCT Board for three-year terms starting in January 2012. Nominations for the three positions closed on 11 March. Ballot materials will be mailed in early May to all teachers on the roll of electors.

The Board is the governing body of the QCT and being a Board member is a major commitment that brings with it many responsibilities. The QCT encourages all registered teachers to exercise their right to vote for suitable teachers to fill the three available positions.

research

QCT Teacher Research Grants

Nominations close soon for the QCT’s 2011 Teacher Research Grants.

A small number of research grants are awarded annually to practising teachers to assist them to attend, and present their research at, key Australian education conferences such as those of ATEA, ACSA and AARE.

Queensland-registered teachers who have undertaken research related to their teaching practice or that of their colleagues are invited to apply for a grant to enable them to present their findings in a suitable national or state forum. The grant provides financial assistance to cover conference registration fees and travel and accommodation associated with conference attendance.

Applications must be on the form provided by the QCT and must be submitted to the QCT by 30 April. Please see the Guidelines for Applicants.
