Glossary of Renewal Terms
Audit
A check of the records (and in some cases, the evidence) of a small sample of those applying for renewal in order to verify their claims in regard to recency of practice, teaching experience and CPD.
Condition
A requirement or restriction on a person’s registration. The most common condition applied on renewal of registration will be a Returning to Teaching condition for those without recency of practice. For those with recency who have not completed the required CPD, a condition requiring completion of additional CPD may be applied.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Ongoing learning related to a teacher’s professional role, in accordance with the QCT’s CPD Framework.
CPD Framework
The QCT’s policy document, developed in accordance with the legislation governing the QCT, which sets out the nature and amounts of CPD that teachers must complete in order to be eligible to renew their registration at the end of their five-year registration period.
CPD recording tool
A table, accessed via a teacher’s online services account on the QCT website, in which a teacher can record the details of the CPD they undertake.
CPD record
A teacher’s written details of the CPD undertaken, including the type of activity, the date, the topic, the provider, the hours of activity, and the professional standards addressed.
CPD evidence
Documentation verifying details of the activity and the teacher’s participation.
Prescribed educational program
An educational program that is either (i) based on a syllabus approved or accredited by the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) or (ii) based on a kindergarten guideline approved or accredited by the QSA.
Recency of practice
Practice as a teacher for a total of at least one year (interpreted as 200 days or 1000 hours) during the five-year period of registration.
Registration period
The five-year period of registration for fully registered teachers. The period starts from the day registration is granted. For teachers who have moved from provisional to full registration, the five year period is reduced by the period for which the person held provisional registration. The period of registration is shown on the teacher’s registration certificate.
Registration end date
The date on which a teacher’s registration ends. For fully registered teachers this will be five years from when registration was granted. See also Registration period.
Renewal of (full) registration
Teachers with full registration must apply to the QCT to renew their full registration every five years. To have their registration renewed, teachers must meet certain requirements including ongoing suitability to teach, recency of practice and CPD, and must pay the annual fee.
Restoration of (full) registration
If a fully registered teacher wishes to maintain their registration, but fails to apply for renewal before their registration end date, they may apply for restoration of their registration within three months after the end date. An application for restoration requires payment of a restoration fee in addition to the annual fee.
Returning to Teaching condition
A condition placed on the renewed registration of teachers who did not have recency of practice when they applied for renewal. The condition requires the teacher to undertake a Returning to Teaching program if they return to teaching in a school (or continue teaching in a school if they have already returned).
Returning to Teaching program
A professional development program that must be completed by a teacher with a Returning to Teaching condition on their renewed registration. The program must be completed only if the teacher continues or returns to teaching in a school.
Suitability to teach
An assessment by the QCT about whether the person is suitable to work in a child-related field and their conduct satisfies the standard of behaviour generally expected of a teacher based on a person’s criminal history and other relevant information.
Teacher
For the purposes of renewal of registration, a teacher is a person who undertakes teaching duties in a Queensland school or in another setting teaching a prescribed educational program (see prescribed educational program).
Teaching
Teaching duties include delivering an educational program, assessing student participation in the program, and/or otherwise administering or providing consistent and substantial educational leadership to the program.
