QCT Board Election
June 2008
Practising teachers come on board
Three practising teachers will help shape decisions affecting Queensland teachers, after being elected to the Board of the Queensland College of Teachers, which regulates and promotes the state’s teaching profession.
College Director John Ryan said this year’s election of practising teachers attracted more interest than in previous years, with 21 teachers nominating to represent their colleagues on the Board from next year.
“The Board gives teachers the chance to bring different experiences to the table, which allows its discussions and decisions to be more informed,” said Mr Ryan.
“Their work plays a vital role in strengthening the community’s high regard for our education system.”
Mr Ryan said the three elected teachers are:
- Marcia Chock Man, deputy principal, St Patrick’s College, Townsville (non-state school representative);
- Roselynne Anderson, principal, Beenleigh Special School, Beenleigh (state school representative); and
- ‘Digger’ (Mark) Hollands, teacher, Cairns School of Distance Education, Cairns (state school representative).
The Board has 17 members and is chaired by Griffith University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor John Dewar. Three of the members are elected practising teachers. Other members are nominated by school systems, teacher unions, the higher education forum, and parent groups. The Board is to be reconstituted for a second term from 2009.
Board members’ responsibilities include helping develop policies and procedures
through meetings, participating on committees and working parties, providing strategic management to support the College’s functions,
and being an advocate for the profession.
The names of the three practising teachers and other board nominees will be provided to the Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts for appointment by Governor in Council for a three-year term. The Board meets monthly at the office of the Queensland College of Teachers in Toowong, Brisbane.
