Program approval guidelines

During 2006 the QCT developed professional standards - the 'Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers' and the 'Program Approval Guidelines' came into effect from January 2007. Following an update, the current version of the Program Approval Guidelines came into effect from January 2011 and was further revised in July 2011.

These 'Program Approval Guidelines' are intended to assist higher education institutions to develop programs that will enable graduates to be registered as teachers in Queensland.

The 'Program Approval Guidelines' include a guide to the application of the 'Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers' for purposes of approval of teacher education programs.

This guide is also produced in the form of a separate document, the 'Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers (graduate level): a guide for use with preservice teachers'. In this, the standards are oriented to graduate level to provide a guide for use with preservice teachers. The graduate orientation is reflected in the wording of the stem used for both 'knowledge' and 'practice' as well as the included components. The guide provides an important reference point and powerful resource for teachers undertaking supervision of preservice teachers.

An additional resource to support supervising teachers' work with the professional standards and preservice teachers has been developed in the form of a 'Commentary and Record' booklet.

National Standards and Procedures for the Accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs

The Australian and State and Territory Ministers for Education on 15 April 2011 endorsed Standards and Procedures for the Accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs in Australia.

There will be a transition period for implementation of the National Standards and Procedures for the Accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs in all Australian jurisdictions and the QCT will keep Queensland higher education institutions and the profession informed of the timelines for this. The QCT will continue to work with AITSL in the development of supplementary materials to support the implementation of the National Standards and Procedures.
